Capstone projects offer students the opportunity to explore areas of interest and develop skills that may shape their future careers. Here are three exciting projects being led by students in different fields:
Blog Posts (Jonathan Tomecek): Jonathan shares insights into the activities and events happening at the farm, giving readers an inside look at farm life.
Planting/Agriculture Project (Amia Yaklich): Amia focuses on growing fresh produce to sell to customers, aiming to promote sustainability and healthy food choices.
Construction Project (Devon Schmitt & Oliver Meyer): Devon and Ollie are working to build a new chicken roost to ensure the chickens are comfortable and safe, especially during the winter months.
Amia Yaklich – #AnimalWhisperer
I spoke with Amia to learn more about her capstone project, and here's what she had to say:
Why did you choose this project? “I chose this project because I want to help plant more flowers and produce that can benefit the environment.”
How do you think it’s going so far? “I think it’s going well. I finished planting everything in one day. It was easy, and now we just have to wait and see it grow.”
Why is this project beneficial to the environment? “I’m planting crops for people to eat, and by planting more plants, I’m helping improve the soil and overall environment.”
What do you hope to learn from this? “I’m hoping to learn how to properly prep a bed in the hoop house and how to know when it's time to harvest the crops.”
Devon Schmitt & Oliver Meyer – #TheConstructionBoys
I also spoke with Devon and Ollie about their project to build a new chicken roost. Here’s what they shared:
Why did you choose this project? "We enjoy building things that have a purpose. The new roost will give the chickens a better space to rest and stay warmer in the winter.”
How do you think the construction is going? “We’ve gathered all the supplies we need, and we should have the roost done soon.”
Why do you think this project is beneficial to the environment? “We’re improving the chickens' living space, which will help them stay healthy and comfortable. We noticed there wasn’t enough roosting space, so we built a bigger one for them.”
What do you hope to learn from this? “We hope to learn more about how blueprints work and gain hands-on experience in construction. We also like that our work will benefit the chickens directly.”
Jonathan Tomecek #The man behind the computer
Why did I choose this project? "I chose this project because it allowed me to gain a new perspective on something I was once shy about. It allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and create something awesome for our wonderful customers to enjoy and read."
How do I think the blogs are going? "As I read different sources and create my own content, I believe the blogs I have made are coming along really well, especially considering that I’ve never been a writer before. I’m proud of how they are turning out."
What am I hoping to learn from this? "I hope to develop new writing skills that will boost my confidence and help me write more effectively in the future."
Conclusion
These capstone projects show how students can apply their skills and interests meaningfully. Whether it’s through blogging, planting, or construction, each project helps the students learn more about the world around them and make a tangible impact on their environment. It’s exciting to see such passion and initiative coming from all involved!
