Unleashing Curiosity: 5th Graders Discover the Wonders of Farming at ReEvolution Farms

At ReEvolution Farms, every child’s wonder shines through the beauty of nature. Each year, a group of eager 5th graders from St. Columbkille Elementary School steps into the realm of farming, giving them a chance to connect with nature in an exciting and interactive way. This year marked the fourth successful partnership between Mrs. Schriver, her husband, and the farm, creating unforgettable learning experiences for young minds eager to understand agriculture.

The day was filled with energy and hands-on activities, divided into three informative stations, each designed to teach essential aspects of farming. From composting to insect exploration, followed by engaging skits about plant survival, these fifth graders were fully immersed in the learning journey.

Compost Station: The Magic of Decomposition

Led by Wahlert student Mickey, the Compost Station opened students' eyes to the fascinating process of composting. They learned how organic waste transforms into nutrient-rich soil. Mickey highlighted the different "compost piles" around the barn, explaining how each stage varies.

“Look here!” Mickey exclaimed, digging into one of the piles. “Composting needs a mix of materials—from eggshells to leaves—and some break down faster than others.” By observing the various stages of decomposition, the children understood how compost benefits the environment.

Some children were hesitant about the "yucky" nature of composting, while others were filled with curiosity. Regardless of their initial feelings, a sense of teamwork flourished as they explored the topic. This session led to vital discussions about waste reduction, sustainable practices, and composting's role in improving soil health.

Bugs, Friend or Foe: Uncovering the Garden’s Inhabitants

The second station, run by students Naomi and Drew, focused on the tiny creatures living in the soil. This “Bugs, Friend or Foe” station transformed the kids into budding scientists. With excitement in their eyes, they dug into the ground to search for various insects.

Equipped with booklets, students wondered: Are these insects friends or foes in the garden? They discovered intriguing critters like earthworms, caterpillars, and roly-polies bugs, documenting their findings.

The 5th graders passionately identified each specimen, learning how creatures like bees contribute to pollination while bugs like spiders can be harmful.

Skit Station: Acting Out Nature's Challenges

The final station, hosted by students Alex, Jaden, and Crew, allowed the students to express their creativity through skits. Here, they learned about what plants need to thrive and how changing environments can create challenges for them.

Each team drew a scenario slip, needing to act out situations like hurricanes or droughts. The creativity on display was impressive, with students sorting through ideas and performing lively skits. They showed how plants adapt to survive in varying environmental conditions.

Alex cheered on the 5th graders as they brought their plant stories to life. Laughter filled the space as the children grasped complex ideas through the fun of drama, highlighting lessons that would stay with them for years to come.

A Day to Remember

When the day concluded, the 5th graders departed from ReEvolution Farms with bright smiles and new insights, taking home knowledge, cherished memories, and a strengthened bond with their classmates. Through hands-on activities about composting, insects, and plant adaptations, the team at ReEvolution Farms sparked curiosity and a love for nature.

It’s inspiring to see students engaged in experiential learning that extends beyond the classroom, fostering a deep connection to agriculture and environmental stewardship. The enthusiasm shared by Wahlert students Mickey, Naomi, Drew, Alex, Jaden, and their peers set a positive tone for the day, reminding everyone that curiosity drives growth.

From digging in the soil to acting out nature’s challenges, each child experienced the excitement of hands-on learning, reaffirming that education can be enjoyable and transformative.

ReEvolution Farms stands out as an educational platform that fuels imagination and cultivates a love for the environment. Here’s to many more years of inspiring young minds to connect with nature and uncover the wonders of farming!

Let’s keep our curiosity alive and continue exploring the treasures of the natural world—one farm visit at a time!
